What Is Shimokawa, Hokkaido?

It was designated as an SDGs Future City (*1) for being an advanced municipality with regard to pursuing the SDGs, and its efforts to make the absolute most of its forest resources received the highest honor at the 1st Japan SDGs Awards in 2017 in the form of the Prime Minister's Award.
This led to an increase in people moving to this small town with a population of roughly 3,000, and it also attracted attention for its collaborations with multiple companies.

※ The SDGs Future City initiative was started by the Cabinet Office in fiscal year 2018 and involves a public call for municipalities that proactively engage in efforts aimed at achieving the SDGs, with recognition given to municipalities that propose the creation of new value through comprehensive measures from the perspectives of economy, society, and environment.
